A toilet that continues running after it has been flushed is easy to ignore at first. The sound may stop occasionally, or the toilet may still appear to work normally.
However, a constantly running toilet can waste a considerable amount of water and may eventually develop into a more disruptive problem. It can also indicate that one of the components inside the cistern is worn, damaged or incorrectly adjusted.

What Does a Running Toilet Mean?
After you flush a toilet, water leaves the cistern and enters the bowl. The cistern then refills to a set level before the water supply shuts off.

1. A Faulty Inlet Valve
The inlet valve controls the flow of clean water into the cistern. It should close once the water reaches the correct level.
If the valve becomes worn, blocked or damaged, it may fail to shut off completely. Water will then continue entering the cistern and escape through the internal overflow.
Signs of an inlet-valve problem include:

2. The Float Is Incorrectly Adjusted
The float rises as the cistern fills and tells the inlet valve when to stop supplying water.
If the float is set too high, the cistern may continue filling until water enters the overflow. If it is stuck or damaged, it may not shut the valve correctly.
In some cisterns, the float is attached to a metal or plastic arm. More modern toilets often use a compact float mechanism built into the inlet valve.

3. A Worn Flush-Valve Seal
The flush valve releases water from the cistern into the toilet bowl when the toilet is flushed. A rubber seal at the bottom helps keep water inside the cistern between flushes.
Over time, this seal can deteriorate, become distorted or collect debris. Water may then slowly leak from the cistern into the bowl.
As the water level falls, the inlet valve opens to refill it. This creates a continuous cycle of leaking and refilling.
A worn seal is one of the most common reasons a toilet appears to refill by itself.
Look carefully at the back of the toilet bowl. A small but continuous stream of clean water can indicate that the seal is no longer closing properly.
4. A Sticking Flush Button or Handle
A flush button, cable or handle that does not return to its correct position can leave the flush valve partially open.
This allows water to continue flowing into the bowl after the flush should have ended.
The problem may be caused by:
A sticking push button
A damaged flush cable
A loose or misaligned handle
A broken internal connection
Limescale or dirt around the mechanism
Repeatedly pressing or forcing the button is unlikely to provide a lasting repair and could damage the mechanism further.
5. Limescale or Debris Inside the Cistern
Limescale and debris can stop moving components from sealing or operating correctly.
Deposits may collect around the inlet valve, flush valve or rubber seals. This can cause the mechanism to stick, refill slowly or allow water to escape into the bowl.
Cleaning may solve minor buildup, but components that are badly worn or heavily scaled may need replacing.
Take care when handling older cistern parts. Plastic components can become brittle and may break when disturbed.
6. A Cracked or Damaged Component
Internal toilet components are used every day and eventually wear out.
Plastic fittings may crack, rubber seals may perish and cables can stretch or snap. A poorly fitted replacement component can also interfere with the normal operation of the cistern.
Where several parts are worn, replacing the complete flush or inlet mechanism can sometimes be more reliable than repairing each individual component.
Why Does My Toilet Refill Every Few Minutes?
A toilet that briefly refills every few minutes usually means water is slowly escaping from the cistern.
The most likely causes are:
A leaking flush-valve seal
Water escaping into the overflow
A faulty inlet valve
A damaged internal component
A leak around the cistern or connecting pipework
Even when you cannot hear a constant flow, repeated refilling should be investigated.
Why Is My Toilet Taking a Long Time to Refill?
A slow-filling toilet may be caused by a restricted inlet valve, debris in the water supply or an isolation valve that is not fully open.
Low water pressure elsewhere in the property could also affect the refill time.
If other taps and fixtures are working normally, the fault is likely to be isolated to the toilet. If water pressure is weak throughout the property, a plumber may need to investigate the wider supply.
Is a Running Toilet an Emergency?
A running toilet is not always an emergency, but it should not be left indefinitely.
